  • Budget management of $2.5 million+ annually, including fiscal oversight of the University Bands, Shoals Symphony at UNA, UNA Choruses, and UNA Opera/Musical Theatre, each with its own operating and scholarship budget. In FY20, secured budget increases for scholarships and total operations (one-time and recurring), including a total immediate financial commitment to the band program from UNA upper administration of $241,658. Additionally, $100,000 was committed from COAS for the purchase of a new grand piano and 8 upright pianos for FY20.

  • Curriculum innovation include leadership through the re-accreditation process as a member of the National Association of Schools of Music; significant changes to the Bachelor of Science in Education – Choral Music and Instrumental Music P-12 degrees, in collaboration with the College of Education and Human Sciences Dean and Secondary Education Chair for AY19-20, reducing the number of credit hours in the degree; creation of two new certificate programs in Musical Theater (three tracks facilitating collaboration amongst arts disciplines in SOTA) and in Percussion Specialist (innovation in curriculum as it is the first certificate of its kind in the world); certification of courses through Quality Matters, including MU 244 – Survey of Music Literature (AY 2020-21), MU 222 – Music Appreciation (AY 2019-2020), with MU 100 – Fundamentals of Music to be certified by August 2021.

  • Facilities improvements include the temporary move of our Strings area to the Connie D. McKinney Center, due to program growth, while working toward an initiative to renovate and expand the campus footprint of the Department of Music. We have received Board of Trustees approval for this project and it is part of the Campus Master Plan. Phase 1 is complete with the $2 million renovation to Norton Auditorium. Phase 2 planning is underway, with temporary renovations complete to the instrument storage room and large ensemble room.

  • Recruitment, retention, and community engagement initiatives typically include well over 100 events annually, both on and off campus. Despite COVID-19, the Department of Music maintained an active and productive year 2020-21 academic year, with both virtual and in-person concerts and recitals beginning in September. Strictly following University COVID protocols and Alabama Department of Health guidance, we hosted UNA Honor Choir (virtual), North Alabama Night of Bands (in-person), UNA Honor Bands (in-person), and UNA Percussion Camp (in-person).

  • Diversity, equity, and inclusion actions consist of the purposeful research and programming of music by underrepresented composers in student and faculty ensembles-in-residence at UNA. We also incorporate the study of diverse populations and composers in music theory and history coursework.
